Funny enough, we ran out of room in our last post for all of our favorite wacky wedding traditions! These are some of the final customs that we just couldn’t leave unmentioned. As always, we’ve also incorporated a blurb about how you might include some of these unique traditions in your own wedding. Keep reading to see what fun ways you can incorporate your heritage in your ceremony:
Dance of the Crown
This is a Finnish tradition we want to see overtake the bouquet toss! In Finland, brides often wear a crown (We are all for this, by the way. What better time to be a princess than on your wedding day?) During the reception, the bridesmaids will blindfold the bride, and dance in a circle around her. The bride then places her crown on one of the bridesmaids, and it is said that this lucky girl will be the next to marry. This tradition would be easy to incorporate into your own wedding — all you need is a crown and a great dance-worthy song!
Bridesmaids Names
A unique Brazilian tradition involves the bride writing the names of all her single friends on the inside of her dress. It is said that this will bring the girls “good luck” so that they might marry soon. If you’re willing to incorporate this into your wedding as a nod to your South American heritage, it would be a great way to include your friends in a part of your ceremony. Additionally, you could always incorporate the names of your bridesmaids on the inside of your dress, to emphasize your combined friendship and love for each other!
Bread and Vodka
In Poland, the parents greet the new couple at the reception with lightly salted bread and vodka. The bread is served in hopes that the bride and groom never go hungry. The salt represents coping with life’s struggles together. Finally, the vodka symbolizes the hope of continued good cheer with their combined friends and family. This is an old Polish tradition, and such a quick ritual before the party truly begins would be a great way to incorporate your Eastern European heritage!
Spanish Tie Ceremony
Don’t include this Spanish wedding tradition if you’re renting tuxedos! In Spain, the groomsmen get together at the reception and cut the groom’s tie to pieces. The fabric swatches are then “auctioned” off to the wedding guests, who receive good luck when they obtain a piece. After the auction is complete, the groomsmen donate the funds to the happy couple. The bride and groom then get to use the money towards their honeymoon. This ceremony would be a fun party game, and it would be a unique way to fund your vacation if you and your partner are not planning on having a registry.
Well there you have it! A few more miscellaneous wedding traditions from around the globe. We hope you enjoyed reading this list.
