Finding a mother’s gown is an exciting (though sometimes overwhelming) experience! You won’t wear a “grandmotherly” gown; and bridesmaids dresses do not have enough structure! Many mom’s seek to combine modern, chic, and elegant elements in their dress, but are not sure where to start. Are you a mother of the wedding party seeking advice on what to wear? Not to worry! These tips from our consultants will help you on your quest for the dress:
- Start early – Mom’s who begin looking for their dress one month before the wedding are stuck choosing “off the rack”, unable to order and may pay extra for rush alterations. We recommend you start your dress shopping process at least three months before the wedding. This will give you time to shop multiple stores, narrow your selection, order if you need to – and schedule time for custom-fit alterations.
- Ask the Bride (& Groom) – The day is about them, after all! Many couples have a vision for their wedding, and this gives you a great opportunity to narrow down your dress selection by color or length. Consider the entire wedding: the venue, formality, and theme. Then, look for a dress that fits these conditions! Bringing the bride with you can also make for a fun shopping experience.
- Compliment, Not Copy – As a mother you’re separate from the bridal party, and you have your own unique role to play! Ideally, your dress will compliment the wedding color scheme. For example, if the bridesmaids are wearing lavender, an eggplant or navy colored dress will set you apart and won’t clash!
- Try on, Try on, Try on – Formal shopping is different than all other shopping! Avoid ruling out things just by how they look on the hanger. Take a chance and try on some styles you normally wouldn’t…you might just surprise yourself!
- Comfort is Key – On the other hand, don’t feel like you need to force yourself into a dress that is totally not you. Pay careful attention to what styles, fabrics, and details you like or dislike. Remember: you’ll be wearing this dress all day and looking at pictures for years after, so make sure you love it!
- Make it Yours – Allow for at least one month to alter and customize your dress. Ask your consultant how long the dress may take to order, and factor that into your decision process. Keep in mind dresses may require a hem or an adjustment, but alterations will ensure a custom fit that will make you even more confident! Having your mother’s dress ahead of time will also give you the chance to match it with jewelry, shoes, and a shawl or jacket.
Mothers of the bride and groom deserve to look fashionable and elegant without sacrificing comfort. Whether you need an evening-gown fit for a classic reception or a comfortable cocktail gown for any outdoor nuptials, mothers dresses should make you feel confident!
